About the Author
Carolyn Forché is an American poet, editor, translator, and activist. Her books of poetry are Blue Hour, The Angel of History, The Country Between Us, and Gathering the Tribes. In 2013, Forché received the Academy of American Poets Fellowship given for distinguished poetic achievement. In 2017, she became one of the first two poets to receive the Windham-Campbell Prize. She is a University Professor at Georgetown University. Forché lives in Maryland with her husband, the photographer Harry Mattison.

This long-awaited memoir by one of our country's most renowned poets and activists tells the story of Carolyn Forché's time in El Salvador during the late 1970s, when the country was on the verge of civil war. At its heart is Leonel Gomez Vides, the sympathetic but secretive Salvadoran who appeared at the young poet's door one day, entreating her to come with him to see his country and "report" on what she finds there. Why should he want a poet rather than a journalist? And what was it that he was so anxious for her to record and report on? Without really knowing why, Forché accepted Leonel's invitation, making the first of several extended journeys to El Salvador, and learning more than she ever expected. What she brought home was a heavy burden of knowledge, indelible memories, and a commitment to act against the horrors she had witnessed. What she left behind was political upheaval, brutality of the highest order, and brave friends, some of whom became casualties of war. Though the book is prose, Forché's exquisite poetic voice is evident, even when she's rendering the most gruesome events. This memoir is full of adventure and history, and at the same time, every lyrical sentence is pitch perfect. This memoir is a true masterpiece and will prove to be one of the most important books published in decades.
Forche is an amazing poet of great urgency. She brings that urgency to this memoir which tells a fascinating story of a young woman who finds herself in a country in crisis. This is a book about moral courage. This is a book about what it means to be a writer in the world. This is a book about friendship, mentorship, discovery of one's purpose in the world. This is a gorgeously written book, a page turner. This is a book I will remember for a very long time.
Fascinating. Forche had no idea what she was getting into when she went to El Salvador. Many of us have forgotten what happened in that country during the period of this memoir (and younger readers might not know at all). For that reason alone, this is a good read. Beyond that, and more importantly, Forche has a wonderful way with words. I'd not read her poetry but be assured that she brings a gorgeous rhythm to her prose. Thanks to Edelweiss for the ARC.
