A few weeks ago I joined the GoodReads 2018 challenge—pledging to read 40 books this year. I thought that this would force me to read all the mysteries in my "To Be Read" pile and on my Kindle. Over the weekend I found this novel on my Kindle and decided to read it. Since it was on my Kindle, I figured it was a mystery and as I read it, I could not figure out why no one had died!! It was a ROMANCE!! But I could not stop reading it. It is cleverly written and un-put-downable!! It was so much fun!! I thought romance novels were all about getting kissed on the neck over and over again. But this one was an honest tale of a 40+ years old, newly-separated mother of three whose children encourage her to date again. Superbly wrapped into this story are the very real risks and surprises of dating after 40. I read this is 2 days and the unexpected ending was worth picking this one up. (I actually thought that Dee Ernst wrote mysteries only) Will I read another romance?? Maybe—but the front cover better not have the kissing neck thing going on.
I really enjoyed the story, it was a pleasant surprise. This was the story of a middle-age woman who was very successful in a career as a romance writer. Her husband has a midlife crisis and falls for a much younger woman and leaves the family that the heroine worked so hard to nurture and preserve. After he leaves, she discovers that he had cheated on her multiple times and was really a butt-face all along. She starts to date again with the encouragement of her 3 teenage daughters and a host of wonderful friends. After dating several men, some winners and a few losers, she finds a good man and does have an HEA in the end, I won't say with who bc I don't want to spoil the fun of other readers finding out who he is.This book was really well written with a great cast of characters. Some parts were so funny I was laughing out loud. What I really loved about the book was that the heroine was smart, funny and independent, she wasn't looking for her husband or any mysterious alpha man to come sweep her off her feet and take care of her, she could take care of herself, she just wanted someone to love her. I saw that some reviewers complained about the lack of explicit sex but for me that was actually pleasant surprise! It was nice to have to use your imagination for a change. Don't get me wrong, I like steamy sex scenes but sometimes authors sacrifice the plot for page after page of mindless sex and ultimately what drives the story is the plot, not the sex. It was also nice to read a book where every other word was not a curse word and where the men didn't use the "b" or "c" word ( which I REALLY HATE) in reference to a woman.To me, this was just a really well written book with really memorable characters, I definitely will read another book by this author.
You got to read this one! If you're from Jersey, you'll get this. If you're married, you'll get this. If you have teenagers, you'll get this. If you have pets, you'll get this. If you have a career or " hobby" that generates a profit, you'll get this. Dee Ernst has done it! This was the most hilarious book this summer, I've read. I've never wanted to share a book as much as I want to with Better Off Without Him. This is truly a brilliant and a side-splitting read. Then add the audible narration of Gillian Vance - killed it! Love her and I will look for more of her narratives. And just so you know, I would love more of Ben, Aunt Lily, Rebecca, Anthony, etc. You know them all. You, Dee Ernst, left me hanging but that's okay , I'm still smiling. Great Book!!!
I have been very fortunate this summer to have fallen into several great Kindle books. THIS book, however, tops my list. All I wanted was an easy, breezy, fun read.I got that and so much more by also purchasing the Audible version. I am sure that I would have enjoyed reading this book, but I REALLY enjoyed listening to it!The narrator was the best I have ever heard ... I felt as if I was listening to a friend telling me about her life with all of it's craziness. I found myself laughing out loud on so many occasions... exactly what I was looking for!I will be looking for more books with the same narrator. She made a good book even better!
Just do yourself a favour and read this book! Not by design, I started reading this story during a quiet day. No deadlines, appointments or commitments. I was a bit Leary about the plot because I love romance, HEAs, and devoted love. I was anticipating the story to unfold like the main character's book in the book. I know...that's confusing.This book is sooooo GOOD! All the characters are larger than life...except the h...she's low key, strong, and resilient. The characters in her life swirl in and out as they defend and support her. The h is funny, hilarious! The conversations with friends and family are hilarious! The dialogue is truly remarkable. No question, this is an unusual plot. Proofing is impeccable! And in the end...well, you'll HAVE to read it!! And now I'm making myself a martini at 11 in the morning!
Loved the book! Funny, at times sad, the author captures the feelings of a woman that after years of marriage, thinking that her life is happy, suddenly finds herself on unfamiliar ground when her husband tells her he is leaving her for a younger woman. The way that she reinvents herself, and emerges from this a stronger, independent and happy woman is inspirational for those of us who have had to live through similar circumstances. Very happy to have found this wonderful author.
