Review

“This book is a fun look at baseball uniforms, showing how the evolution of the game compelled teams to try new styles with vibrant colors and nontraditional designs. It is enjoyable to relive some of the epically bad uniforms, like the all-brown once worn by the San Diego Padres, and wonder what they were thinking.” —Ed Sherman, Chicago Tribune “Winning Ugly is a visual delight of the more untraditional looks to appear on a Major League ballfield over the years, with original illustrations sketched by Radom himself, as well as a wealth of historical photos and newspaper clippings to help tell the story. . . . In between the stunning visuals you have the stories of each of these garish getups, how they came to be, their reception by players and media of the day. Bottom line, if baseball uniforms are your thing, you’re going to want this book.” —Chris Creamer, SportsLogos.net “Still, it seems that if anyone is more qualified than Radom to go through the MLB’s closet and expose it on this subject, speak now or forever hold your Sansabelt slacks up with a safety pin. . . . We’re not sure whether to thank him or remind him that some people actually embraced these as being so bad they want them back on those 'Turn Back The Clock' promotions. . . .How it goes down in the scorebook: Uniformly superior to anything we’ve seen like this before.” —Tom Hoffarth's The Drill: More Farther Off the Wall "Throughout Winning Ugly, Radom discusses historical changes, the materials and fashions of the day dictating the on-field designs, and even how formative designs were in shaping the future of uniforms. He discusses color, marketing, trends, and the 1970s revolution of flamboyancy." —Tim Newcomb, HOW Design "Despite its title, Winning Ugly is a beautiful book . . . it should be on display in a fan’s home." —Dennis Anderson, Journal Star "Radom's book provides enjoyable, fascinating, and a detailed account of baseball uniforms." —Thomas Biblewski, The Inside Game, SABR Deadball Era Committee“This book is a fun look at baseball uniforms, showing how the evolution of the game compelled teams to try new styles with vibrant colors and nontraditional designs. From the Author

Winning Ugly is a loving tribute to the most "questionable" uniforms in MLB history.Abridged from my introduction:Baseball, more than any other sport, lends itself to introspection and observation. For many baseball fans, their relationship to their favorite team begins with the uniform. As comedian Jerry Seinfeld famously observed, the players come and go, teams sometimes move from city to city, and fans end up" rooting for the clothes."This is a book for those of us who look at those clothes with interest. Sometimes this interest is akin to watching a dumpster erupt inflames, transfixed by what's happening, all the while a little nervous at what the end result might be.It's a tribute to the sheer chutzpah of whomever it was that decided that the Pittsburgh Pirates should wear a dizzying combination of black and gold uniforms that made them look for all the world like a swarm of bumblebees. This is for everyone who, like me, knows that once upon a time, the Padres looked like tacos and that the Astros wore tequila sunrises, that the White Sox swathed themselves in leisure suits, and that once upon a time in Cleveland, Boog Powell resembled a giant blood clot.

This book deserves five stars because it is a perfect baseball uniform book. Todd Radom has all the depth of knowledge you need to discuss this history. But he writes as a fan and child of the 70s. He discusses why the colorful uniforms of the 70s developed, how the trend expanded and why they ultimately went away. He is honest rather than nostalgic about the lack of color in the iconic uniforms of the 50s and carries the narrative beyond the 90s. His love of the crazy double knit era is clear. The thing that puts this book into the five star range though is that he chronicles when good teams make bad decisions (I'm looking at you Pirates Red uniform) and has an entire chapter on the "Turn ahead the clock night" of the late 90s. This is legendary among uni-fans. Radom appreciate the zany creativity of the idea and provides beautiful pictures. In fact the whole book is beautiful, a work of art in and of itself. If you love baseball uniforms or pine for the sans-a-belt pants and pullover shirts of the 70, this is a must have.

Although it had some redeeming qualities, it was disappointing. My main bone of contention was with the photos and illustrations. To begin with, they were not placed near the text on them and next they were insufficient. Many uniforms were discussed in the text that were not shown either by photo or illustration. Often I found myself reading text about a certain uniform but never was shown an image of it. Many sounded very interesting. Granted, the author could not be expected to show every memorable uniform, but at least show the ones in the text. This is theoretically a visual book so visuals should be abundant. Having to go online to look up many of the uniforms described was annoying and should have been unnecessary. I saw the author in High Heat on MLB network and it whetted my appetite for the book. As I said, disappointing.

Ever get the feeling that a book was written especially for you?I was looking forward to this since I heard about it, having owned two of the jerseys feature in the inside covers: Astros and brown Padres. I also lived in Philly when the team changed jerseys, logos and stadiums in 1970. Too bad the winning didn't accompany them in those days.Only wish Winning Ugly had more pages, photos and illustrations to enjoy. Wonderful use of cultural references (Nigel, DeLorean, Cookie Puss) to add color to an already heavily saturated story. I’d say Todd Radom is uniquely qualified for this creation. If you love baseball history combined with the visual aspect, be sure to check out Todd's work online. Top drawer designer, master of typography, ultimate baseball fan.

Good for kids or sports enthusiasts . My husband loves this, he really loves the history of sports uniforms and logos so gets a kick out of the photos in this book. My 11-year-old is equally fascinated by the book.

I got this for my husband. The added bonus was it kept my two young grandsons entertained for hours!

Bought this for my husband for Father's Day and he absolutely loves it!! He loves all things baseball and history and this book really delivered on both! He had fun showing me and the kids the pictures!

Funny stories about the uniforms. Very interesting.

Headline speaks for itself. The most fun a true fan have!
