Business and technology journalist Brian Blum (brianblum.com) has covered all sides of the high-tech revolution. His articles about companies ---and the people, behavior and sometimes astonishing events that are behind them --- have appeared in The Jerusalem Post, Haaretz and Israel21c. He is a senior analyst for the Advanced Interactive Media Group and its "Classified Intelligence Report." Blum's own Internet publishing startup Neta4 raised $3.2 million, in 1998. He served as entrepreneur-in-residence for Jerusalem Global Ventures and was a vice president of marketing for telecommunications provider Comverse.Blum has spoken at conferences and universities worldwide and was international president of the IICS multimedia professional association. A complete, apparently well researched (40% of book is endnotes!!), documentary of one of the saddest failures of the "startup nation." Rapidly adopts and type of back-biting criticism that plagued Better Place late on, maybe intended this way. How associates like Renault, Renault's Israel distributer, and Israeli bureaucracy scuttled the Better Place. Not that Agassi himself was blameless, but imagine throwing Elon Musk out of Tesla! Speaking of Tesla, they sell/distribute their own cars. Only do so where they can readily put in the needed infrastructure. We will not see them here in Israel. I could only wish they would have bought up Better Place!Good read if someone can learn the lessons!

I just finished Totaled, very much enjoyed it. Despite dealing with a complicated subject, story and personalities, I feel like Blum presented everything in an easy to understand format that gave a clear picture of what happened. I'd like to add that Shai Agasi had a quality that is essential to succeeding big in business. In my thirty years in business, I've found that all guys that have made it huge (like the founders of my franchisor, Wetzel's Pretzels) have this quality, even if in the end they don't succeed. This quality is the belief in their own BS. This is essential for any individual to make it really big. At any rate, thank you for the work and research that went into this. One silver lining is the way that the Fluence ZE owners have come together to form an extended family in Israel. In our world where relationships seem to become more and more distant, there is something beautiful about being in a community. Well done Brian!

I'm not a person who usually enjoys reading about business and finance, but I was so enthralled by Totaled that I couldn't put it down. Blum's account of the rise and fall of Israel's hugest and most ambitious hi-tech startup is both fascinating and entertaining. Particularly engrossing are the depictions of Better Place CEO Shai Agassi, whose enormous audacity and hubris first powered his company's meteoric rise, and then brought about its utter doom. Reading this is like reading a classic Greek tragedy, and Blum's blow-by-blow chronicle of it is mesmerizing.

"Totaled" tells the inspiring yet tragic tale of Better Place in a way that is engaging and understandable even for someone like me who doesn't know a lot about cars. I found it to be an engrossing drama that I could barely put down once I started reading it. Kudos to Brian Blum for giving us a readable and thorough look at a fascinating story.

I work in the EV industry and found this book to be very informative, especially why the 'battery swapping' feature fell behind compared to fast charging. Book is well written, easy to understand, and not too long of a read.

This is a well-written and fascinating story of the rise and fall of Better Place, whose promise to bring low-cost electric vehicles to Israel, and eventually to the rest of the world, ultimately failed, due to a host of different reasons, including poor management, bad decisions, and hubris. Brian Blum tells a gripping story, and keeps everything moving, swiftly and efficiently. A great read!

TOTALED is a gripping read - very hard to put down once you're in it. I will admit that I had missed completely the story of Better Place as it happened, but the tale Brian tells is a familiar one of great promise and great disappointment. It is both wonderful and sobering to see that billion-dollar hubris is not unique to Silicon Valley.

A good, balanced book, telling the story of a man who wanted to change the world, and the fate of his company. Well written, detailed and unbiased account of the Better Place story.
