I am writing this for the whole series. Honestly I was not very thrilled after the 1st book, but I forced myself to go forward, hopping for the best. 1st person dialog is used, which makes a good development of the main character, however, because everything is seen through the eyes of one person, the rest of the characters lack depth, and it is hard to create a bond with them. As you encounter them many times through the story, you get to know them better, however, it is not ideal. You should keep going after 1st book, so do not give up just yet.The writing is getting better as the story goes on, less cheesy sex, and more action and adventure. In the last book the author gets half the book from 3rd person perspective, which is clearly an improvement in the writing style, and lets you get to know Mordred better. The narration is quite good, but it takes a little to get used with the narrator, which has some interesting intonations. The last 2 books are narrated by somebody else, which is not a plus(even if narration is good), as you get used with the original one through the previous 5 books. This being said, I recommend the books, and looking forward to follow the story into the Avalon Chronicles!

This was a very enjoyable follow up to Crimes Against Magic (Hellequin Chronicles Book 1) and take place a couple of months after the end of that book. I admit I was a little confused by the character Sara at the start of the book as she was written as someone I should have been expected to know from book 1 in the series but didn't remember her being in it at all. This story fleshes out more about Avalon and both Nate and Tommy's backgrounds as both an old and new threat come back to haunt them. I would say this is an improvement on the first book in the series and I'm looking forward to the next book in the Hellequin chronicles (now I know what that name refer to).

The book is basically two plots rolled into one entry, we get a wild west story in 19th Century Montana (emphasis on wild, with evil sorcerers and death cults) and a modern horror urban fantasy with a psycho serial killer involved. Nate is back, this time as full time dark sorcerer vigilante and we get lots of interesting side characters introduced, also more of the ones from the first book are built upon. If you liked the first book this is a great follow up, written from first person PoV so it reminds me a lot of the Dresden Files by this point with less humor and more gore.Bonus points for interesting side plots, a summer house of the Lord of the Underworld (no seriously) and a main character who continues to embrace his darker side to get things done.

I enjoyed reading this, but I feel like Nate’s personality doesn’t fit his background. I suppose the reset of sorts he went through with the ‘ten years with no memories’ might affect him but he feels too fiery to be this legendary persona called hellequin. And I thought he was going to try to keep a low profile? Doesn’t really make sense to make an open declaration of war when you don’t even have an army unlike your opponent. On top of this you said Nate see things in terms of gray and I guess that’s his ‘any means necessary.’ But I haven’t seen him do anything too atrocious to win other than the bit of torture he did.Well I did enjoy and there’s plenty of books to go (probably was pointless to write a review but oh well.)

Similar to the first book, Crimes Against Magic, the story plays out in London with historical flashbacks. The flashbacks are actually a story on its own and runs parallel to the current day story – introducing new characters as well as similar villains and indicated whether or not Nate was able to defeat those villains in the past. This increases the uncertainty whether he would be able to defeat the current evil. The story is action-packed, gritty and full of graphic violence. There are interesting developments and surprises – a great plot overall. More background is provided on Nate, Tommy and Avalon. Nate’s obsession with the character Sara didn’t really fit for me (was more of an irritation to be honest), but I presume she’ll play an important role in future books. There are still some mysteries to be solved as Nate unlocks more of his hidden and unknown powers.

This book was just as great as the first! You can't help but love Nate. A bad ass w a heart of gold. At least for those he loves. He would stop at nothing to help them.We are reunited with a person from the first book and Nate's past. As with the first, Nate's past is tied in with solving the problems he currently has in the present and there is a twist to old mythology. I love the way the author is able to blend both and not have you feeling lost.Nate is an interesting character. Although I'm not sure how he is able to like so many women and not het gutted yet. LolA must read for any fantasy fan.

I can't express enough how well done this series is. Its action packed with emotional ties between the characters and a created world that is awe inspiring. Nate is powerful and a formable force on his own but when you include this friends and allies he is a force to be feared. This is only the second in the series and the anxiety created from having to wait till the next book is almost to much to bear. I just hope McHugh gets whatever funding or inspiration he needs to keep the greatness coming. This book is a must read for anyone looking to feel like your in the story and living the excitement moment by moment. If I was forced to say anything negative about this book or its predecessor it would be the depression that comes when you finish the book and the almost blood lust for the next instalment. Steve McHugh you are a genius and a worker of magic on the page. Please keep doing your thing for many years to come because I don't know about your other fans but I'm losing my mind just waiting.
