I have read many books on sled dogs, both personal narratives and "how to." Due to a lack of snow in my area, my "mushing" has been limited to bikejoring and carting (other than a few minor adventures as a child, further north). I found Mary Shields' book to be one of the best. Shields doesn't have a self congratulatory, "I'm so tough" writing style; instead, she is thoughtful, observant, and thankful for the life she leads.I enjoyed her description of the dogs and the people in her life. Cabbage, her Labrador Retriever cross lead dog, who happens to be the lead dog she used when she was the first woman to complete the Iditarod race, is wonderful. How many lead dogs come back for you when you lose your sled?
A great story. Mary shares her inspiring experiences of living in Alaska and touring via dog-sledding. She describes her simple lifestyle, love of the amazing natural beauty, and camaraderie with the people. Her tale of being the first woman to complete the Iditarod is told with humility and humor.

Mary's writing takes you along for the ride! Wonderful insight to the people, the villages, the Iditarod trail, and the landscape. She makes you feel like you are there. 1st woman to finish the Iditarod race. Her description of the experience is great.Her special bond with her Black Labrador lead dog "Cabbage" is inspiring.My Husband & I both read the book & are still talking about it!You'll like this book!
We were lucky enough to meet and greet with Mary in Fairbanks a few months ago. She is a delight. I bought the book to read more specifics about some of her adventures. I enjoyed her book but I yearned for more intimate details. What is it REALLY like sleeping in the dog sled in minus whatever temperatures in the middle of nowhere. Mary does not seem to think those activities are hardships. Don't the sled "ribs" still into you? Do te dogs sleep quietly all night? Does one worry about wild animals visiting in the middle of the night? I would love to go visit with her again to hear more stories. She is quite a woman!
