Review

"This is a subtle and engaging work, underwritten by a deep knowledge of Heidegger's texts: it does much to advance our understanding of Heidegger's complex, conflicted, relationship with the transcendental and it deserves the closest of attention." ―Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews "Written with a sure-handed command of Heidegger’s corpus and the historical context of his thinking, Heidegger’s Shadow makes a powerful case for its persisting transcendental character. In the process Engelland’s remarkable study manages to offer not only a way out of a current impasse among reigning interpretations of Heidegger’s mature thought but also a compelling account of its singular strengths and weaknesses. Tightly and lucidly argued, this book is scholarship at its finest, a major contribution to understanding the promise of Heidegger’s later writings." ―Daniel O. Dahlstrom, Boston University, USA, author of Heidegger’s Concept of Truth "Chad Engelland’s provocative and carefully researched book is the most sustained treatment to date of the role that transcendental philosophy plays throughout Heidegger’s path of thinking. Tracing the early Heidegger’s fascination with transcendental phenomenology as the key to his enduring question―above all, in close readings of Husserl and Kant―Engelland goes on to show how Heidegger’s subsequent attempt to ‘jump over his shadow’ and escape transcendentalism was both necessary and impossible. In the tension between these two modalities, Engelland finds the basis for a positive appropriation of Heidegger’s project that does not lose itself in false dichotomies between ‘early’ and ‘late’ periods." ―Steven Crowell, Rice University, USA, author of Normativity and Phenomenology in Husserl and Heidegger and coeditor of Transcendental Heidegger "With Heidegger’s Shadow Chad Engelland has given us the best book in any language on the transcendental in Heidegger. Deftly argued and clearly written, this path-breaking work tracks that crucial issue from Being and Time through the two Kant books and the complex potpourri that is Contributions to Philosophy. One needn’t agree with everything in this text to realize that it puts us in the presence of a first-rate philosophical mind." ―Thomas Sheehan, Stanford University, USA, author of Making Sense of Heidegger: A Paradigm Shift "In this careful study, Chad Engelland makes the case that the transcendental questions pursued in Being and Time were not simply abandoned in Heidegger’s later work, but were transformed into an inquiry into fundamental dispositions―ways in which we find ourselves thrust into an ‘affective transcendence’ appropriate to our historical juncture. Engelland tells an insightful story about the continuity of Heidegger’s thought while shedding light on many of its essential impulses." ―Richard Polt, Xavier University, USA, author of The Emergency of Being: On Heidegger’s ‘Contributions to Philosophy’ "Few scholars have taken up the transcendental character of Heidegger’s thought in as thorough or rigorous a fashion as has Chad Engelland. Heidegger’s Shadow not only makes a powerful case for the continuing significance of the transcendental (and so also of Kant as well as Husserl) throughout Heidegger’s thinking, but also shows why the transcendental, even if it is not all that philosophy is, nevertheless remains an essential part of it."  ―Jeff Malpas, University of Tasmania, Australia, author of Heidegger’s Topology: Being, Place, World and coeditor of Transcendental Heidegger "Engelland’s study is one of the most comprehensive treatments of Heidegger’s interpretation of Kant that is available, and is a must-read for scholars interested in this subject and in the question of Heidegger’s relationship to transcendental philosophy." ―Leslie MacAvoy, East Tennessee State University, USA

Heidegger's Shadow is a must-read for anyone interested in Heidegger. It is much more than a study on only one aspect of Heidegger's thought, it is an essential text for coming to terms with his thought as a whole.Engelland takes as his title a phrase from Heidegger's 1935/36 lectures on Kant -- about the decisive movement of thought being that which attempts the impossible, viz. "leaping over one's shadow." According to Engelland, this describes Heidegger's relationship to transcendental philosophy: it is "Heidegger's shadow," that which he strove to overcome but ultimately could not. Engelland is not saying, then, that Heidegger is a transcendental philosopher, but rather that understanding Heidegger means understanding his relationship with the transcendental philosophy that he was trying to overcome. Readers of his first book, Ostension: Word Learning and the Embodied Mind (MIT Press), will not be surprised how systematically and lucidly Engelland takes us through Heidegger's encounter with phenomenology and with Kant in order to prove this point. The topic is a difficult one. At the heart of transcendental philosophy is the transcendental turn, but Heidegger hardly ever speaks of this. The reason is, as Engelland's chapter on the Contributions to Philosophy (Of the Event) (Studies in Continental Thought) reveals, that the turn is not one we make as a method of research, but one that happens to us, to which we can and should be awake. At the core of the book are two chapters laying out Heidegger's original interpretation of Kant in the Kant and the Problem of Metaphysics, Fifth Edition, Enlarged (Studies in Continental Thought), and then Heidegger's revision to that interpretation in the "revised Kantbuch," the What Is a Thing?. The latter chapter is the best one in the book. This study is a fun, gripping read. It shows how important Kant is as a traditional figure to Heidegger, as Kant thinks through (though without overcoming) the central prejudice of modernity, viz. the mathematical prejudice, which lies even deeper than the logical prejudice, the topic of Daniel Dahlstrom's classic work, Heidegger's Concept of Truth (Modern European Philosophy), to which Engelland's book forms a good companion volume.Serious Heiddegger scholars need to own a copy of this book.
