About the Author

I've read several Alzheimer's books and this is my favorite so far! An easy read. I enjoy the ongoing narrative, it helps me relate to situations I've experienced but then offers such great techniques for avoiding and recognizing why my loved one is behaving the way they do- and the explanations really help me see things from the mind of a demented person -explanations that i can fully understand and even explain to someone else. I really appreciate that this book is pro "recognizing triggers therefore avoiding catastrophic behavior" and NOT just "treat/medicate/react to catastrophic behavior" although it does recognize that some things are unavoidable. It really was eye opening in saying that so much of the Alzheimer's affected person's behavior is a reaction to fear/insecurity/outside influences (explains why) and that those are all things i can play a huge part in reducing (and teaches you how) -which makes my life and their life better, which is what we all want!! I highly recommended this book!
Angel Smits has provided a winner in this modest, but not abbreviated treatment of sensitive help for families and caregivers of persons with Alzheimers. She approaches the caregiver's trials with this insidious progressive disease by giving a "case study" for each "stage" of the disease, a discussion of the physiological and emotional challenges of the loved one and also those of the caregiver. Practical steps are provided for coping with difficult behaviors and emotions. This structure provides a good read for individuals but also a format for support group discussions or workshops.
I selected this book because my husband has been diagnosed with dementia.I am so thankful I did. Sometimes it was scary, but for the most part it was comforting to understand and prepare myself as much as is possible for what may come
This book was so helpful for my mother in law that has dementia. My husband and I are her primary caregivers. The examples and information were spot on to what we are experiencing with her.I found it easy to read and the story about Lou and Rose was very good.
My mom was just diagnosed with Dementia. This book will help my sisters and I so much. We have so much to learn and we can't afford to hurt our Mom. But knowing what to do is so hard. Thanks for answering so many questions.

The book was very informative. Medical definitions were kept simple and understandable. Most importantly, the bulleted suggestions were invaluable to the family caregivers of my 91 year old mother, who has mixed behaviors due to dementia.
This is a great book for anyone who has loved ones with a diagnosis of Dementia or Alzheimer’s or for any caregiver that has to deal with these terrible diseases. It was very helpful in giving advice on how to deal with the harder issues and had helpful tips to help reassure the patient! Great book!
